The past week has been extremely busy, mostly catching up on stamp issues missed upon the initial announcement or lack thereof.  After seeing it listed first on eBay and then on Colnect, I have recently added the Israeli helicopter ATM-vended postage released on 1 January as well as a huge number of stamps issued by the French Southern and Antarctic Lands on 2 January; they issue all of their stamps for the entire year on a single day and they are on sale for two years after that.

I have recently passed the 80-entity mark on this site (although not all of these have an associated 2020 stamp issued…yet). It is a far cry from the estimated 230 stamp-issuers who released stamps in 2019 but I am making progress.  Postal authority websites are a mixed bag — some offer a wealth of information in multiple languages along with good-quality images while others do not cater to philatelists at all or once did but have not been updated in many years.  I am considering writing reviews of some of the truly user-friendly sited but that may have to wait until this year is over.  When would I find the time?

This marks the 55th year that Canada Post has issued special, themed stamps to adorn the holidays. These latest designs strike a nostalgic note and conjure up vivid memories of all things shiny and bright during the festive season.

The issue, which includes stamps at the PermanentTM domestic (reindeer), U.S. (dancers) and international (partridge) rates, was designed by Andrew Lewis. His inspiration for the luminous set came from fond memories, as a child, opening holiday greeting cards from overseas relatives.

“I found the card illustrations charming, and the stamp designs captured the true essence of the holidays. Those lovely memories embody the emotions I still feel about sending warm greetings to those near or far,” he explains. “My illustrations are simply about the illumination of light and love, which is, in my heart, what the holidays are all about.”

The issue includes a booklet of 12 Permanent domestic rate stamps, six-stamp booklets at the U.S. and international rates, a three-stamp souvenir sheet, and an Official First Day Cover cancelled in Val-Brilliant, Quebec – to reflect its theme.

We hope these festive stamps make your holiday mail more festive.

Christmas 2019 – The Magi
04 November 2019

The Gospel According to Matthew, the first book of the New Testament, recounts the arrival of the Magi in Bethlehem, after they followed a star that heralded the birth of a king. Our latest Christmas issue celebrates their long journey, their discovery of the infant Jesus, their offerings of gold, frankincense and myrrh, and their deep belief in the importance of his birth.

Created by Liz Wurzinger and Timothy King at Subplot Design Inc. and illustrated by Michael Little, the stamp is a simple two-colour design. The look is echoed on the Official First Day Cover, which features the shepherds from the Nativity story in the Gospel of Luke. The cover’s cancel location – King City, Ontario – is an allusion to the Magi, who are also known as the Three Kings or Wise Men.

“Michael’s skill was essential to finding the right balance between fine detail and the larger picture,” explains Wurzinger. “This stamp captures the essence of the journey – one that anticipates the wonder, awe and expectation of the Christmas season.”
