Χριστούγεννα 2019 / Christmas 2019
Design: Doxia Sergidou
The representations on the two €0.34 and €0.41 cent stamps take us to the festive spirit of the great holiday of Christmas.
The €0.64 cent stamp illustrates the mural painting of the worshipping Panagia Arakiotissa and Kecharitomeni (Our Lady of Araka full of Grace) from the Church of Araka in Lagoudera dating back to 1192. This masterpiece of Arakiotissa is unique as to its content and symbolisms. The posture of Jesus leaning in his mother hands reminds us of the image of Christ-child as eucharistic symbol in Melismos. The characteristic eanring wom by the Jesus has been interpreted by a passage of the Exodus and with verses of the Old Τ estament in relation to the Passover sacrifice which is read in churches on the holiday of Candlemas.

Commemorative Postal Issue: Christmas 2019 – 1st Size Commercial Letter Correios do Brasil
In the art created by Giana, the Christmas scene – represented by the star, the garland, the pine tree and the house number – has as its central figure the little girl carrying a letter addressed to Santa Claus. His image represents the innocent, unblocked, free and kind part that each person carries within, from which we can recover our most sincere desires. The idea of this art is to say that a reality can come from a dream, from an intention, and that Correios, as a centenary institution, participates in this moment. The letter is the messenger who affirms the possibility of materializing our dreams in transcribing to paper. The dog represents loyalty and friendship. The shadows cast on the wall suggest universal values such as love, unity, and peace, symbolized respectively by the heart, the family, and a little dove.

CHRISTMAS. BUILDING THE NATIVITY SCENE. MERRY CHRISTMAS
Many people eagerly await the new Christmas stamp issues launched by Correos at this time of the year. It is the start of the period for Christmas greetings, of remembering distant loved-ones, or our nearest and dearest close by worthy of being remembered, or the long awaited letter to the Three Wise Men or Father Christmas.
Each year, the Christmas stamps decorate these greetings as they adorn the houses or shop windows of towns and cities.
This year, the religious Christmas stamp, starring the Nativity Scene, specifically by this time much awaited in many Spanish homes, where the family gathers to put together the Manger Scene.
From a Nativity Scene with the leading figures of the one known as “Mystery”, to nativity scenes with more than a thousand figures and biblical scenes, this tradition dates back to the Middle Ages, more specifically to the 13th century. The origin of this representation, as we know it today, is owed to Saint Francis of Assisi; many sources that agree that it was the saint who started the tradition in Christmas 1223.
This stamp is also featured on a Premium Sheet dedicated to Star of Bethlehem, the protagonist of many of these crib scenes. A composition of these stamps form the star that according to tradition, served as a guide to the Three Wise Men from the East to reach the Infant Jesus.
Experts have tried for years to find an explanation to this celestial phenomenon. Some said that it was Halley’s comet; others that it was a supernova, and the latest theories speak of the conjunction of the star Regulus and the planet Jupiter. Whatever the case, it is clear that in most Spanish homes, this star is the crowning glory of the Nativity Scene.
The other stamp dedicated to Christmas issued by Correos this year, features several iconic Christmas images, such as the turkey, decorative tree objects such as baubles and bells, presents, and the Christmas tree itself. In addition, accompanying these elements we can read Merry Christmas in the different official languages of our country.

ANDORRA. CHRISTMAS 2019 Cherubs
A cherub holding a bunch of grapes, protruding from the twisted folds of one of the Solomonic columns of the altarpiece of San Juan Bautista, is the detail selected to illustrate the Principality’s annual Christmas issue. The stamp has been produced using the chalcographic printing technique, which gives the image the texture and beauty that is so characteristic of this type of printing.
The altarpiece forms part of the set of two altarpieces, the second dedicated to Santa Lucía, which adorn the church of Sant Esteve in Andorra La Vella. Dating back to around the 11th and 12th centuries, the parish church is one of the oldest in the Principality, having undergone various modifications throughout its history, the last one being in the 20th century.
The altarpiece dedicated to San Juan Bautista (Saint John the Baptist) decorates the front of the chapel. It is a baroque altarpiece, gilded in 1707, structured on two levels and three panels. The main carvings are devoted to Saint John the Baptist, on the lower section, and the Virgin of Montserrat, on the upper part. Both sculptures are flanked by the smaller carvings of San Marcos and San Roque, on the lower level and San Pedro and San Francisco Javier, on the upper section.
In its entirety, it is an outstanding work of art, both due its architectural design and delicate ornamentation as well as the beauty of the colours and the quality of the gilding. The columns separating the panels are profusely decorated, with a predominance of angels, grapevines and other symbolic elements.
The symbolism of Saint John the Baptist revolves around the sacrament of baptism, and the baptism of Jesus Christ on the Jordan River. He is mentioned in the four canonical gospels as the son of the priest Zechariah and Isabel, cousin of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Isabel could not have children, but the archangel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah and told him they would have a son, and God wanted them to name him Jesus. The gospel relates that Herod Antipas ordered him to be beheaded at the request of his step-daughter Salome, whom he wanted to marry.
