From Åland Post:

25 March 2022

In 2022, the ÅSS pavilion celebrates its 100th anniversary as tavern and clubhouse for the Åland Yacht Club ÅSS. Artist Carolina Sundelin took on the challenge to capture this popular architectural gem located in the western harbour of Mariehamn. The house in gingerbread style was drawn by Lars Sonck (1870–1956), one of Finland’s most high-profile architects in the early 1900s. The house was built 1895–1899 as summer villa and moved to its current location in 1922, where it serves as a popular restaurant today.

The second stamp issue on this day spotlights the growing sport of disc golf. Today, Åland has the highest density of disc golf courses in the world and an ambition of turning the island realm into the world’s largest disc golf park. In 2022, the disc golf course in the Badhusparken in Mariehamn celebrates its 40th anniversary. The stamp is a tribute to the happy 1980s and the anniversary of the course, showing the fifth disc golf basket, overlooking the entrance to the western harbour. With this stamp, Finnish illustrator Sanna Mander makes her debut as stamp artist for Åland Post.

The 2022 series of postal stationery cards, Say it with a card, will also be issued on 25 March. The series is designed by illustrator Amanda Valkonen of Mariehamn, who has created four playful cards suitable for congratulations, party invitations, friendly greetings and personal love notes.

9 May 2022

ÅLAND POST CELEBRATES 100-YEAR-OLD SAILING PAVILION WITH STAMP

On 25 March, Åland Post pays tribute to the ÅSS pavilion, a popular and acclaimed architectural gem in Mariehamn. Artist Carolina Sundelin took on the challenge to capture the special design of the house. “I’d never really noticed the house before. It’s an interesting building and it was fun to discover that the architecture is reminiscent of an Asian building ”, Carolina says.

Designed by Lars Sonck (1870–1956), the ÅSS pavilion is an example of his National Romantic style with influences from Karelia. The log house in gingerbread style was built 1895–99 on a cliff above the harbour as summer villa for Karl Hällberg, a doctor at the spa resort in Mariehamn. After his death, the eagle’s nest, as the house was nicknamed, was bought by the Åland Yacht Club (ÅSS) to be used as clubhouse. In 1922, the building was moved to its current location on the shoreline in the Western harbour, where it serves as a popular summer restaurant today.

Artist Carolina Sundelin took inspiration from photographs of the pavilion from the 1920s when she designed the stamp original in water colour. She also devoted time to personally investigate the nooks and crannies of the building:

“Since focus was to be on the house, I removed advertising images, flagpole and terrace. The many tiny windows on the building and the dragon details proved to be a challenge. Also, the house stands beneath the cliffs with a great number of pine trees in the background, so, the house doesn’t emerge very well. Of the two designs I made, I preferred the one without the cliffs and trees, which also became the one used for the stamp”.

ÅLAND POST ISSUES WORLD’S FIRST DISC GOLF STAMP

25 March sees Åland Post’s issue of the world’s first stamp featuring disc golf designed by Finnish illustrator Sanna Mander. The disc golf course in Mariehamn will be celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2022, and the stamp is a tribute to the happy 1980s and the jubilant course. Today, Åland has the highest density of disc golf courses in the world, and an ambition of turning the island realm into the world’s largest disc golf park.

One of the oldest active courses in Europe is the 9-hole disc golf course in Badhusparken in Mariehamn, which in 2022 celebrates its 40th anniversary. The stamp is a tribute to the happy 1980s and the jubilant course, showing the fifth disc golf basket on the Badhusberget in Mariehamn, overlooking the entrance to the western harbour.

Illustrator Sanna Mander has previously illustrated stamps for Posti Finland and now makes her debut for Åland Post. She explains her thoughts about the design of the motif:

“My style is based on colours and shapes in composition – I don’t draw realistically. I move the elements around, trying to find an exciting dynamic to the image. I was reminiscing my wonderful childhood summers in Åland when I drew the stamp. I hope it will inspire you to go out for a round of disc golf!”

Disc golf is the fastest growing sport in Finland, and the commitment to turn Åland into the world’s greatest disc golf park was initiated by Mats Adamczak, Chair of Åland Business Association:

“I was charged with developing new concepts that would encourage “staycation” and give new holidaymakers reasons to visit Åland as tourists. On 25 July 2020, we inaugurated 11 courses in 7 hours. Since last year, over 120 000 rounds of disc golf with some 6 million throws have been played in Åland.”

From the press release:

MEET THE “SJÖRÅ”, KEEPER OF THE SEA, ON EUROPA STAMP FROM ÅLAND

On 9 May, Åland Post issues the annual stamp in the PostEurop Europa stamp series. The 2022 theme is stories and myths, and the Åland stamp shows the “sjörå”, a female water spirit according to Åland folklore. Illustrator Lasse Harkkala is responsible for the interpretation. “The stories about the sjörå were inspiring and appealing because the figure is unpredictable and uncontrollably primitive; you don’t know if it’ll contribute to fortunate events or cause sorrows, and the uncertainty is both frightening and attractive to us humans.

The stamp motif is largely based on stories recorded in the 1890s in Åland. A ‘rå’ is a keeper of a specific area. Stories about the water nymph, however, are told in all the Nordic countries. The sjörå, also known as mistress of the sea, is closely related to the mermaid. She rules the sea and the lakes and, also, predict deaths and bad weather.

Considered a beauty, her good looks only extend to the front. From behind, she is a hollow rotten stump. She likes showing herself to humans and is fond of young men, awarding he who joins her with good hunting and fishing luck. She keeps a pike as a pet and also her own livestock. Her manatees can be seen grazing among human livestock and even mating with them.

The 2022 Europa stamp is Lasse Harkkala’s first stamp commission. The tales of the sjörå sparked his imagination and the images flowed from his pen. Lasse explains:

“You could say that Vellamo in the Kalevala or the sirens in the Odyssey are the impulse for the sjörå itself. I also wanted to include many animals in the images, because I think it would be cool to be friends with nature’s wild animals, like the sjörå, and to be able to see the world from their perspective.“
