European post operators design stamps for “Endangered National Wildlife”

Wednesday, May 5, 2021

EUROPA stamps is one of the most popular special thematic sets issued since 1956, with a common theme, by Posts in 49 European countries and members of PostEurop.

This year’s edition has the common theme “Endangered National Wildlife” and the Hellenic Post chooses to depict animals falling under the “Critically Endangered” category, namely species facing an extremely high risk of extinction from their natural habitat in the near future, as described in the “Red List of Endangered Species in Greece”.

They include one land animal, the deer, and one sea animal, the common dolphin, both of which are depicted in their endangered environment. The deer is depicted caught in a fire and the common dolphin trapped in a net.

For the first time, the EUROPA Greek stamps are designed by students of the Athens School of Fine Arts who have attended the class “Graphic Arts – Stamp” from the Engraving Department, taught by Dr. Myrsini Vardopoulou and supervised by Prof. Yannis Gourzis

The design used a main feature of Engraving, namely breaking down the drawing into lines. “Thus, we have achieved a different artistic approach; one could say that it directly refers to old copperplate engraving stamps, but in combination with modern techniques. The most important aspect of this work is the clarity of the drawing”, points outs the teacher.

It is noted that the stamps will participate in the online PostEurop competition, together with the respective stamps from the remaining post operators – members of PostEurop, so as to declare the best theme depiction.
