Adriana Czernin
Ornament and Art
The ornament plays a very important role in the works of Adriana Czernin. In the series “Young Art in Austria”, the Austrian Post shows one of her works on a special stamp.
Adriana Czernin was born in 1969 in Sofia, Bulgaria, and has lived and worked in Vienna and Rettenegg in Styria since 1990. Her earlier, mostly large-format pencil and color pencil drawings are of delicate colour, often in red and pink tones. Often the artist’s face and body are embedded in floral patterns and grid-like structures. Executed with meticulous detail, the drawings look almost three-dimensional, the background and clothing merge seamlessly into each other. The brand subject shows the work “Untitled” from 2004, made in a size of 45 by 62.5 centimeters with coloured pencil and pencil on paper. The artist is represented by Galerie Martin Janda in Vienna, where her works are regularly exhibited.
In her current works, Adriana Czernin now deals with geometric ornaments instead of floral ones, not only as a form, but also as a metaphor for cultural and social relations. The various aspects of the ornament, its functions and rules are examined by means of construction and deconstruction. Powerful colors, black and grey tones as well as clear shapes dominate these series of images.
