“In 2015, the Ministry of Culture of Andorra and the institutional representatives of La Seu d’Urgell (Spain) and Foix (France) met to lay the groundwork for a joint bid to list several Unesco World Heritage sites, due to their shared history linked to the stately heritage linking the three countries. In February 2019, the government of Andorra approved the “Exploratory Document to assess the viability of this multinational Unesco World Heritage bid between the States of Andorra, Spain and France”.
Andorra defends the historical value of the Co-Principality and the Earth Council, the first parliament in more than 600 years of history, as exceptional and unique values in the world; Andorra’s bid includes 11 monuments: the House of the Valleys (Andorra la Vella) where the Parliament sits, Sant Joan de Caselles (Canillo), Sant Romà de les Bons (Encamp), Sant Martin de la Cortinada (Ordino), Sant Climent de Pal (La Massana), Santa Coloma (Andorra la Vella), Sant Serni de Nagol (Sant Serni de Nagol (Sant Julià de Laria) and Sant Miquel d’Engolasters (Escaldes-Engordany), the Moorish Tower (Encamp) and the rocks of Enclar and Margineda (both located in Andorra).
Spain supports the inscription of St. Mary’s Cathedral in La Seu d’Urgell and France the inscription of Foix Castle.
To support this application, La Poste and Correos have each included a philatelic programme in their Andorra 2020 programme. It will consist of the issuance of a stamp and 2 vignettes, honoring the Casa de la Vall (Andorra), the Château de Foix (France) and the Cathedral of the Seu d’Urgell (Spain).
