Herzegovina is rich in sun and stone, vines and figs. Even in ancient times, when living in poverty, guests were welcomed with open arms and the best that was done in the house was presented on the table. The housewives managed to make sweets that were unavoidable at the Christmas table, they were treated to dear guests, and they were most looking forward to the children. Among such, unique Herzegovinian sweets, are the cork and fig.
The meatpepest is made from white wine juice (lard, must) which is sedate and cooked until it boils. At the same time, a certain amount of cold must is mixed with flour and sugar, and then lightly added to the must that is cooked until thickened so that it can be slightly poured into containers. Then the plug dries for several days in an airy room with the obligation to turn daily until it dries completely.
Figs are prepared from ground dry figs, finely chopped walnuts and almonds. Brandy is added to the mixture, most often lozovača, just enough so that round shapes can be kneaded, which are then dried in the oven. In addition to round shapes, figs can be formed like salami.
Thanks to the efforts of individuals, ćupter and smokvenjak are not forgotten, today they are available on the market as special flavors of Herzegovina with a touch of the past.
Hrvatska pošta d.o.o. Mostar issued 2 commemorative postage stamps in an 8-mark ark, a stamp and an envelope on its first day (FDC). Brands and supporting materials can also be purchased online at www.epostshop.ba.
