The coronavirus COVID-19 has changed the face of the world, affecting all aspects of daily life and activities including philately. In several ways, the pandemic has been a boon to stamp collecting. When territories around the planet began instituting lockdowns to help control the spread of the virus, collectors found themselves spending time with their collections while many returned to the hobby they enjoyed in their youth. Spurred by media attention given to this “new-found” popularity, a number of people began collecting stamps for the first time. When entities began issuing stamps to bring attention to COVID-19, interest was piqued — an interest that rising with each new release within this newest of philatelic themes.

In the earliest days of March, rumors of forthcoming COVID-themed stamps abounded.  There were several items that turned out to be complete hoaxes including fabrications using the names of Sri Lanka and Turkey.  Several early design considerations for China’s stamp circulated through social media long before the eventual official design was announced.  Even this was changed before the actual release due to a few design errors.  The first stamp under this topical to see public availability was that of the Republic of Iran on 17 March.  However, this remains somewhat difficult to obtain due to that nation’s lockdowns as well as the fact that common online payment services are not allowed there.

Additionally,, there were many personalized stamps being passed off as “official” releases. A case in point is several from Indonesia, two of which appear on this site as they were originally touted as actual releases by the postal administration rather than the department that handles print-your-own items. While many of the personalized items are quite interesting from a design standpoint — as are the plethora of pictorial and delayed mail postal markings, cachets and post cards, cancelled-event items, local post and private mailing company stamps, and so much more — they are beyond the scope of this site’s current focus; there are too many officially-released postage stamps this year to concentrate on presenting the full range of COVID-19 philatelic material that exists out there.  Several collectors have been compiling catalogues listing much of this material.  Perhaps next year, I will add a few of those items to Philatelic Pursuits.

Thus, this checklist concentrates on those items officially released by postal administrations. The majority are regular postage stamps although there are also semi-postal sheets (with a printed surtax which is donated to charity), a few postal tax items, “official” personalized stamps (sold by the postal administrations themselves) and several private personalized sheets. Several stamps are not exactly COVID-related but the pandemic was mentioned in advertising and/or a portion of the sales goes to charity).  These are listed at the bottom of the checklist.

Clicking on the links (highlighted in yellow) will take you to the original article picturing (and occasionally giving more detailed information) each of the stamps. Not all of the stamps have an associated article (and a few have yet to be added to the checklist) but I will continue to update this post as I finish articles and receive information on yet-to-be-announced items.

In addition to the New Issues announcements for the following stamps, Philatelic Pursuits also has several additional articles related to the topical — an early attempt (12 April) to separate the “Truth, Lies and Rumors” of COVID-19 philately and part one of an “Incomplete Catalogue” of these stamps which I published back on 21 May.  I had envisioned the latter article to be the first of a multi-part series covering all of the various aspects but got somewhat overwhelmed with the sheer number of personalized stamps which had begun appearing around that time.  I gave up so I could devote more time to non-viral stamps. Finally, there is an article first published on 6 April about the recall of the originally announced design of China’s stamps and illustrates the differences between that and the actual release.

I would like to mention that I recently assisted in the setup of a Facebook Group that covers the entire range of collectible material related to COVID-19 as well as malaria, the Influenza Outbreak of 1918-1919, HIV/AIDS, and more.  If you are interested, please join us in Pandemic Philately.

I hope this checklist proves useful.  Any additional information and higher-quality images is much appreciated.  Please add these in the comments below.
