Nature photographer Audun Rikardsen has published a book on whales – and takes the reader on a journey into the world of whales. He follows them closely 24 hours a day and in all weather conditions.

Readers learn about all of the “winter whales” and the latest findings from whale research. The killer whale is one of the main characters in the book and belongs to the top of the ocean’s food chain. Most killer whales are found in Antarctica, but there are also around 3,000 in the Norwegian Sea and Barents Sea.

Killer whales are social animals that travel in pods and live in polygamous relationships: The male mates with multiple females. A pod can consist of anywhere between 4 and 40 whales and can stay together for several generations.

Killer whales are known for their intelligence, which is particularly evident in the way they communicate.

  1. I have a question about this stamp. I notice the stamp says Europa, but I’m unsure of what connection it has to ancient postal routes. I also saw they have a different stamp issued this year of an ancient postal route that I suppose is their “official submission” to the Europa contest. So is this just an neat unrelated orca stamp, or is it part of their europa program? I know countries often make multiple stamps related to the Europa theme. Is this such an example?
I’m new to philately, so I hope this question makes sense.

    • Hi, the Orca stamp is part of an annual series issued by Scandinavian nations under the Norden designation. This year’s theme is Mammals.

The Orca stamp is not a part of the EUROPA series organized by Europ Post, the theme of which for 2020 is Ancient Postal Routes. Norway’s release in that series was issued in early May and, as do all official EUROPA stamps, feature the Europ logo of a stylized postbox.

The “Europa” inscription on this and many other Norwegian stamps simply indicates that it is intended for mail to European destinations with a weight limit of 20 grams. Another inscription commonly seen is “Innland” for use on domestic mail up to either 20g or 50g. Most stamps intended for International destinations apart from Europe usually have a numerical denomination.
