INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF NURSES AND MIDWIVES. ELVIRA LÓPEZ MOURÍN.

The World Health Organization unanimously agreed to declare 2020 as the International Year of Nurses and Matrons, with the aim of paying a meail tribute to the work that every day, in every corner of the world, the people who perform this work do.

Without them, WHO says, it is impossible to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals or universal health coverage.

This day is born a unique opportunity for countries to show how much they appreciate their nurses and midwives, react and give them the necessary support so that they can make the most of their enormous professional worth.

The label with which Correos joins this homage, has as its protagonist Elvira López Mourín.

In 1918 the first promotion of professional nurses of the Spanish Red Cross was formed, among which was Elvira López. Shortly thereafter he joined the Hospital de Melilla.

In October 1922, attacks in the Tizzi Azza area resumed and an air expedition with surgical equipment was ordered to care for the hundreds of wounded.

Nurse Elvira López volunteers to make this dangerous journey that ends up being a success and becomes a great historical event as it was the first Spanish health transport of people and also, the first flight of a sanitary woman.

His heroic act entailed the recognition of King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia.

The seal shows an image of Elvira López and in the background, three planes representing those who made the mythical journey.

The image of a sanitary girl with a baby in her arms reminds us of the great work that midwives do every day helping to be born.

Finally, in the center of the seal, we can see the logo of the International Year of Nurses and Matrons.
