João da Cruz , (John of the Cross) was a Spanish Carmelite mystic , priest and friar venerated as a saint by Catholics. Born in Fontiveros, in Castela a Velha, he was one of the most important exponents of Contrarreforma .
A great reformer of the Carmelite Order, he is considered, together with Santa Teresa de Ávila , the founder of the Barefoot Carmelites. João is also known for his literary works and both his poetry and his investigations on the growth of the soul are considered the culmination of mystical literature and stand out among the great works of Spanish literature.
