The marathon is the longest and most difficult athletic discipline. It is named after a Greek soldier, Philipidus, who, according to legend, ran from the Marathon field to Athens to announce the victory of the Greeks over the Persians. Marathon races (42 km and 195 m in length) and half marathon races (21 km and 97 m) are held worldwide and are attended by thousands and thousands of competitors.

Mostar Half Marathon promotes a healthy lifestyle and the importance of physical exercise. It involves all generations and is unique in the world because it runs across 7 bridges connecting the city of Mostar. The Old Bridge, the most famous Mostar Bridge, together with the Old Town, is on the UNESCO list of protected cultural heritage.

The aim of the Mostar Half Marathon is to raise awareness of the importance of physical exercise and influence on improving the health of the population, humanitarian action and promotion of Mostar, Herzegovina and BiH. In addition to the half marathon, there is a humanitarian race for 4 km citizens and a 1 km children’s downtown race in order to achieve positive exercise habits from a young age. All children are winners and receive a medal because their joy is their greatest success.

The Croatian Post Ltd. Mostar has issued a commemorative postage stamp in a 9-stamp sheet, stamp and first day envelope (FDC). Stamps and related materials can also be purchased online at www.epostshop.ba.
