Ski Flying World Championships – Planica 2020
At the end of March this year, Planica will host the Sky Flying World Championships for the seventh time in its history. The very first World Championships in this discipline in 1972 were in fact held in the valley below the mountains of the Ponca/Ponza chain. Since that time, ski flying has undergone remarkable development and become the most interesting ski jumping discipline – one might even say the sport’s crowning glory.
Slovenia’s biggest festival of sport draws tens of thousands of visitors every year. This year they will have the opportunity to witness competitions of a slightly different nature – in the form of battles for medals. These are of course the goal of every athlete, but one that is only achievable every two years, which gives this competition a particular added charm. The battle for medals begins on Thursday, 19 March.
The first task of the fearless eagles will be to conquer the giant flying hill built by the Gorišek brothers in the qualifying rounds and secure one of the forty places in the individual competition. The competition will then take place over two days, on the Friday and the Saturday, and the ski flyer with the highest number of points after four flights will be crowned world champion.
The last day of the sky flying spectacle is dedicated to the team competition and the hunt for a new set of medals. The four best flyers from each country will attempt to write themselves into sporting history on the Sunday. Those of us who have the honour of witnessing the unforgettable flights in Planica will also be part of history.
