Claude Cahun, born Lucie Renee Mathilde Schwob, was a French surrealist photographer, sculptor and writer. Best known for her androgynous self-portraits, she is famous for creating some of the most startlingly original and enigmatic photographic images of the twentieth century, which focus on the themes of identity, gender and the subconscious mind.
This stamp issue features eight of Cahun’s photographs, showcasing her work over the decades. The 80p stamp carries the logo of SEPAC, the Small European Postal Administration Co-Operation, and forms part of a joint stamp issue entitled Art in the National Collection.
