Poetess, novelist, playwright, lyricist, Andrée Chedid has tirelessly questioned the human condition. His work reflects the urgency to celebrate the deep value of life, beyond generational, religious, cultural, geographic differences…
Of Lebanese origin, born in Cairo, Andrée Chedid moved to Paris in 1946. This lover of the French language devoted herself to poetry for fifteen years before exploring other literary genres: novels – Le Sixième Jour, L’Autre, both adapted for the cinema, L’Enfant multiple, Le Message… -, short stories, essays, plays – including Le Montreur, Échec à la reine -, songs, especially for his son Louis and his little one – Matthieu sons, children’s books…
From her childhood in Egypt, a country whose tolerance and humor she praised, from her years in Lebanon, she retained an oriental sensibility devoid of nostalgia. And if she often pays homage to her roots, she strives in her poems as in her novels to build bridges between the past and the present, between the Near East and the West.
With a fluid and luminous writing, both sober and lyrical, Andrée Chedid often makes her characters evolve in a dark universe, where good and evil meet. But hollow, from one emotion to another, this unconditional of hope, going beyond the tragedy of reality, tries to lift the misunderstandings between men to highlight what brings them together.
Goncourt Prize for short story in 1979 and Goncourt for poetry in 2002, that for which to write a poem was “to take life by the arm”, left a considerable work, internationally recognized, carried by a conviction: the necessity of love, love of life, love of the human.
