In 1915-1922 before the introduction of the litas, there was a great deal of money in Lithuania, as the Russian czar ruble and the German mark, ostmark, ostruble and US dollars were in circulation. In addition, other currencies – Polish marks, Latvian and Liepaja rubles – circulated in the individual territories. Only in Vilnius region was it possible to pay with 6 types of money. In August 9, 1922 The Constituent Seimas adopted the “Law on the Monetary Unit” and on the proposal of Vaclovas Vaidotas, Secretary of the Seimas Economic Commission, the currency was named litas, one hundredth of which was denominated in cents.
